Speaking of streaks

February 18, 2007 Leave a comment

Got another addition for our all-sports-name team, from an unusual place!

  • Tara Hittle, Hawaii (volleyball)
  • Amy Swisher, Northern Iowa (basketball)
  • Krystal Keepers, Austin Peay (volleyball, but we’re converting her to soccer)
  • Cassandra Shotwell, Mississippi Valley State (basketball)
  • Betsy Boardman, Arizona State (basketball)
  • Danielle Hitzeman, Alaska-Fairbanks (volleyball)
  • Tamara Jo Guardipee, Montana (basketball)
  • Jenna Diggs, Bowdoin (volleyball)
  • Christina Fish, Bowdoin (swimming)
  • Hilary Disch, Olivet Nazarene (basketball)
  • Ashley Sweat, Kansas State (basketball)
  • Marcus Mile, Montana (track)

Wahine basketball won their sixth in a row today! A resounding 79-63 win over Utah State. They have been playing quite unselfishly lately. Four ‘Bows in double figures today (five in Thursday’s win over Fresno State). I could see the ‘Bows quite possibly winning the next two as well. Finally, they’re playing like they should be playing!

Cyclones, Trees, and a Wahine Streak!

I was probably the only person outside of Ames, Iowa, and Columbia, Mo., who watched the Iowa State-Missouri women’s basketball game this afternoon instead, and am damn proud of it. It was a great game; the Cyclones ended up winning 76-68, but the game was back and forth for the most part and both sides shot nearly 50 percent from 3-point range.

Before that game they showed Stanford-Cal. The boys game before went long, so we missed the beginning of the game, so I missed seeing Cardinal point guard JJ Hones go down with a knee injury 45 seconds into the game. Stanford were the ones who missed her after that. Candice Wiggins was cold, Jayne Appel was ineffective, Brooke Smith was out of rhythm, Jillian Harmon was quiet. Cal won going away, 72-57. Even the Tree couldn’t help the Cardinal today.

Every time I hear “Jayne Appel” I think they’re saying “Jade Abele.”

Speaking of the Wahine, they won consecutive ball games for just the second time this season, beating Nevada, 74-72, last night. The Wahine shot 63 percent from the floor. Sixty-three percent! Highest field goal percentage for the ‘Bows since 1998. Tanya Smith and Brittany Grice were a combined 11-of-12 from the floor! The ‘Bows almost gave it away at the end though, as Tanya Smith was just 5-of-10 from the free throw line, including two key missed foul shots down the stretch. With the ‘Bows up by three, Nevada’s Dellena Criner made a transition layup and drew a foul on Amber Lee with 11.5 seconds left. Criner, who I swear was something like 8-of-8 from the line in the second half of the second half, went to the line and … missed! Tan grabbed the rebound, made 1-of-2, and Nevada’s Bre’Anna Henry missed a 3 attempt at the buzzer (thank goodness!).

Watching the Texas-K State game yesterday, I decided to make an executive decision and add another member to our all-sports name team:

  • Tara Hittle, Hawaii (volleyball)
  • Amy Swisher, Northern Iowa (basketball)
  • Krystal Keepers, Austin Peay (volleyball, but we’re converting her to soccer)
  • Cassandra Shotwell, Mississippi Valley State (basketball)
  • Betsy Boardman, Arizona State (basketball)
  • Danielle Hitzeman, Alaska-Fairbanks (volleyball)
  • Tamara Jo Guardipee, Montana (basketball)
  • Jenna Diggs, Bowdoin (volleyball)
  • Christina Fish, Bowdoin (swimming)
  • Hilary Disch, Olivet Nazarene (basketball)
  • Ashley Sweat, Kansas State (basketball)

Yeah, it’s not an action or a position or anything, but you can’t argue that athletes don’t sweat!

All-Sports Name Team

ooh, STAN has found another all-sports-namer!

  • Tara Hittle, Hawaii (volleyball)
  • Amy Swisher, Northern Iowa (basketball)
  • Krystal Keepers, Austin Peay (volleyball, but we’re converting her to soccer)
  • Cassandra Shotwell, Mississippi Valley State (basketball)
  • Betsy Boardman, Arizona State (basketball)
  • Danielle Hitzeman, Alaska-Fairbanks (volleyball)
  • Tamara Jo Guardipee, Montana (basketball)
  • Jenna Diggs, Bowdoin (volleyball)
  • Christina Fish, Bowdoin (swimming)
  • Hilary Disch, Olivet Nazarene (basketball)

STAN tells me Hilary is averaging 3.9 assists, and had at least one 14 assist game this year!

Vandalised

January 18, 2007 Leave a comment

Wahine faced Idaho last night. I wisely remembered to bring my Nancy Drew notepad, but not so wisely forgot to bring a writing implement. So you only get what I can remember. Sorry.

Wahine won 71-61. That I didn’t remember, but luckily box scores are online. Tanya Smith was full on awesome again, making her first 10 shots and finishing 11-12 with 24 points, one referee’s bad foul call short of a double-double. Of course, it wasn’t too surprising, considering the Vandals were tiny. Their starting center is a 6-foot freshman, and it gets shorter from there. It’s kind of sad when Amber Lee is taller than your entire team. (But that 6-foot freshman (Katie Madison) is leading the conference in scoring at 19.5 ppg!)

The guys playing with the scoreboard must’ve sensed a blowout, because before the game, they spotted the Vandals three points. It was only momentary though, and wouldn’t have mattered in the grand scheme of things.

And we revive the All-Sports Name team! STAN has been working overtime and found not one, but two new names!

  • Tara Hittle, Hawaii (volleyball)
  • Amy Swisher, Northern Iowa (basketball)
  • Krystal Keepers, Austin Peay (volleyball, but we’re converting her to soccer)
  • Cassandra Shotwell, Mississippi Valley State (basketball)
  • Betsy Boardman, Arizona State (basketball)
  • Danielle Hitzeman, Alaska-Fairbanks (volleyball)
  • Tamara Jo Guardipee, Montana (basketball)
  • Jenna Diggs, Bowdoin (volleyball)
  • Christina Fish, Bowdoin (swimming)

And Jenna really does dig — STAN said she averaged 4.32 dpg last year.

So tonight after we finish Ka Leo, I log into my e-mail and find this:

The college basketball season is upon us and we’re thrilled about getting our 2004-05 campaign underway with three tough non-conference opponents at home — Mississippi Valley State, Coastal Carolina, and Southern Illinois. …

I was like, what is this? I telnet into UNIX to check my e-mail, so I didn’t see all the graphics and things. It took me a while to realize it was one of those H-Mail things “from Riley Wallace” you can sign up for on the UH athletics site. Did you sign me up for this? Cause I sure as hell didn’t sign up for it.

I skimmed through the H-Mail and this caught my eye:

In addition to the men’s squad, I encourage you to support our women’s basketball team …

That should be the other way around for me. But, since it isn’t in the e-mail, guess I’m not encouraged to support the men’s squad :)

STAN, our independent researcher, has researched another player for our all-sports-name team:

  • Tara Hittle, Hawaii (volleyball)
  • Amy Swisher, Northern Iowa (basketball)
  • Krystal Keepers, Austin Peay (volleyball, but we’re converting her to soccer)
  • Cassandra Shotwell, Mississippi Valley State (basketball)
  • Betsy Boardman, Arizona State (basketball)
  • Danielle Hitzeman, Alaska-Fairbanks (volleyball)

STAN and I joked that our newest addition to the team was Tara Hittle’s long lost second cousin twice removed.

Interesting stat from STAN: Two games into the basketball season, the Tennessee State Lady Tigers have surpassed their win total from last year.
